After 6 weeks of lockdown in India, the Modi government opened liquor stores, on which the sea of drunkards came.
According to Indian media, the citizens also completely ignored the precautionary measures against the coronavirus and there were long lines of drunkards outside the liquor stores.
In New Delhi, there was a fight between the citizens and the police when the police stopped them. Police used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd.
Heavy tax on liquor stores
In view of the increasing demand of alcohol, and clashes, some states decided not to open shops, and some imposed heavy taxes on alcohol.
A special corona tax of 70% has been imposed on the purchase of liquor in the capital New Delhi.
Alcohol tax plays a key role in the revenue of a total of 36 Indian states and federal units. Most of them are suffering from lack of funds due to the disruption of economic activities caused by the virus.
It should be noted that the number of corona cases in India is more than 53 thousand and more than 1700 people have been killed while India has the longest lockdown in the world which has been extended till May 18.
